Making the submission before the CJM Kalpana Gauns as directed by the court during the last day of hearing, Public Prosecutor V G Costa placed on record of the court that the principal amount is pegged at a whopping Rs 19.42 crore, while the matured deposits of around 600 depositors amount to Rs 56-plus crore.
PP Costa made the submission after the CJM during the last hearing asked the prosecution to work out the principal amount owed to the depositors in order to ask the accused, Nilesh Raikar, to pay up before being granted bail.
Adv Antonio Clovis Da Costa told the media after today’s hearing that the prosecution has submitted the amount worked out by the EOC before the court. “Fifty per cent of the principal amount works out to around Rs 10 crore. Now let us wait and see whether the accused would be willing to deposit the amount before the court,” Adv Clovis said.
The accused was not present in court when his bail plea came up before the CJM, as he was reportedly indisposed and was taken to a hospital. The CJM has adjourned the matter to June 30, the day on which order on the bail is likely to be pronounced.
